Guide: How to clean and change coils on your e-cigarette

E-cigarettes require regular maintenance to provide the best flavor and longevity. One of the most important parts to keep an eye on is the coil – the small heating part that vaporizes the liquid.

When should the coil be changed?

  • Less steam production

  • The e-liquid tastes “off”

  • You have used the coil for more than 1-2 weeks (depending on usage and type

  • The taste becomes burnt or metallic

.

How to change the coil

1. Unscrew the tank from the battery

Start by disassembling the e-cigarette. Unscrew the tank and turn it upside down.

2. Open the tank and remove the old coil

Unscrew the bottom of the tank and pull or unscrew the old coil – depending on the model.

3. Check the tank and clean it

Use lukewarm water to rinse the tank. Dry with paper or let it air dry.

4. Prepare the new coil

Drip some e-liquid directly onto the coil (the small barrel openings) – this is called priming and prevents dry hits.

5. Insert the new coil

Screw or press the coil as your model requires.

6. Assemble the tank and fill with e-liquid

Fill up the liquid and wait 5-10 minutes before steaming – so the coil becomes saturated.

Cleaning a coil (optional and depends on type)

This works best with coils that are removable and do not have burnt cotton wool.

1. Remove the coil and rinse with warm water
Hold the coil under warm water to remove e-liquid residue.

2. Use vodka or isopropyl alcohol for deeper cleaning
Place the coil in a bowl of vodka for about 1 hour and rinse thoroughly afterwards.

3. Air dry completely (12-24 hours)
Do not use a wet coil – make sure it is completely dry before using it again.

The history of e-cigarettes – from idea to modern vapor

The e-cigarette as we know it today has a relatively short but exciting history beginning in the early 2000s – but the idea of a smoke-free cigarette is actually older than that.

1960s – the first ideas

The first patents for “smoke-free nicotine devices” were filed in the 1960s, but the technology was not mature enough and the products were never commercialized.

2003 – The modern e-cigarette is born

Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik is considered the inventor of the modern e-cigarette. After losing his father to smoking-related illness, he developed an electronic device that used a vaporizer to deliver nicotine without smoke. His invention was launched in 2004 by the Ruyan company in China.

2006-2008 – Expansion to the West

The first e-cigarettes appeared in Europe and the US in the mid-2000s. The products were initially very simple and resembled traditional cigarettes (the so-called “cigalikes”).

2010s – Technology development and community

As interest grew, manufacturers and users began experimenting with better batteries, larger tanks and interchangeable coils. This led to the rise of mods, sub-ohm vaping and an entire vaping community.

Today – Innovation, regulation and alternatives

E-cigarettes today come in many forms: from disposable models to advanced systems. They are used by millions of people around the world – both as an alternative to smoking and as a hobby. At the same time, there is a growing focus on regulation, age limits and health research.

Fun fact:

The English word “vape” (to vaporize) was named Word of the Year in 2014 by Oxford Dictionaries.

Fun Fact: The first e-cigarette was lumpy!

The first commercial e-cigarette, invented by Hon Lik in 2003, was far from the slim model we know today. It was big and heavy – almost like a pen connected to a battery. The technology has since improved immensely!

Fun Fact: Steaming as a hobby

E-cigarettes have gained popularity not only as a smoking cessation tool, but also as a hobby. Many users are experimenting with building their own modded e-cigarettes and coils, which has created an entire community of DIY vaporizers.

Fun Fact: Steaming in movies and TV

E-cigarettes have started to appear in popular TV shows and movies as an alternative to traditional cigarettes. In some cases, e-cigarettes have even been used as a way to spare actors the health risks of smoking real cigarettes.

Fun Fact: Vape tricks have become a sport!

Yes, you read that right! There are actually competitions where vapers compete to do the most impressive “vape tricks” like O-rings and tornado vapor. It has become a hobby and subculture for many.

Fun Fact: E-cigarettes in the room?

There have even been trials with e-cigarettes in a weightless state. NASA tested steaming devices in their space station to study how steam works in zero gravity.
