Wiibroe Årgangsøl is one of Denmark’s strongest specialty beers. It’s a dark golden lager with fresh, tart and sweet flavors and a mild floral aroma due to the extra hops. For 20 years now, vintage beer has been an interesting part of Danish art and culture because since its introduction, recognized artists such as Per Arnoldi, Bjørn Wiinblad and Kasper Eistrup designed the label.
Wiibroe is a North Zealand brewery founded in 1840 by C. Wiibroe when he took over a small white beer brewery in Helsingør. Since 1998, the brewery’s production has been handled by Carlsberg Denmark, which has owned the brewery since 1964. However, Wiibroe is still the beer of North Zealand because of its historical roots and because it is still primarily distributed here.
Wiibroe was the first non-Copenhagen brewery to sell bottled beer in Denmark. Only three years after Carlsberg launched the bottom-fermented Bavarian beer, the brewery also began trials with the type of beer that needs cold storage during fermentation, which was initially done in the Kronborg casemates.
