Amaretto is a sweet Italian liqueur with a dark golden color and a lovely sweet almond flavor. It is made on a base of apricot stones or almonds, sometimes both.

The name Amaretto is an affectionate derivation of the Italian word “amaro” meaning “bitter”, indicating the characteristic flavor. The wonderful slightly bitter taste is enhanced by sweeteners, and sometimes sweet almonds, in the final product. Therefore, the name of the liqueur can be said to describe the taste as “slightly bitter”. Amaretto is not to be confused with amaro, another family of Italian liqueurs, which, although also sweetened, has a stronger, bitter herbal flavor.
