Just over 400 kilometers north of Stockholm is the small gin distillery Hernö Brenneri in the town of Dala. Said to be the northernmost gin distillery in the world, the distillery was established in 2011 and on December 1, 2012 Hernö Brenneri released its first gin, Hernö Swedish Excellence Gin.

Swedish Excellence is a modern take on the classic London Dry Gin. The distillation includes eight ingredients: juniper, coriander, meadowsweet, cassia bark, black pepper, vanilla, cranberry and lemon peel. All ingredients are soaked in organic wheat alcohol for 18 hours before distillation and only water is added afterwards.

On the nose, Swedish Excellence is full of fresh and crisp juniper, a bright citrus and light and distant floral sweetness.

On the palette, you start with an intense and fresh juniper – almost like a mentholated pine needle forest. Then a distinct citrus from coriander, which together with the floral sweetness of the meadowsweet is reminiscent of bergamot. The long finish is filled with fresh juniper and citrus.

The relatively low alcohol percentage of 40.5% also makes it easy to enjoy Hernö Swedish Excellence pure.
