The history of Navy Strength gin dates back to the 18th century and the British Navy. The Royal Navy promised that there would always be a certain amount of gin on each ship while sailing the high seas – to fight disease. To ensure the gin was of an acceptable quality, it was tested by igniting a mixture of spirits and gunpowder. If it burned with a bright flame, this was the ‘proof’ that the alcohol had an acceptable strength of at least 57%.
