Rum came late to Panama – the first rum was distilled in 1908, five years after the country seceded from Colombia. This is the Cuban rum tradition, which means small batches distilled in old copper stills, soft richness, lots of tobacco and caramel, some vanilla and a round and long finish.

That’s the style of Malecon, whose 18th anniversary edition gives most other rum countries a run for their money. There’s butterscotch, coffee, bitter orange peel and full-bodied Tongan vanilla, with an aftertaste of the best chocolate. Harmony and softness and no sharp alcoholic edges.
