In ancient times, Michaelmas was the day when the farmer and his people gave thanks for the rich gifts of the year, for the good harvest and for the full storehouses. Often people partied the night before and the day after. The tin mugs were diligently filled with home brew and the atmosphere around the long table was characterized by joy and gratitude. It was the 28. and September 29th. The day also marked the transition between summer and winter. Soon the fiddler tuned his fiddle for dancing and refreshments were served. Most sought-after was the madam’s own mead, which she had brewed in late summer from the good heather and flower honey. The delicious drink was accompanied by freshly baked caraway pretzels, which really brought out the mead flavor. The good Danish Valhalla Mead “a god drink for good people”, because “Valhalla Mead is always in fashion”.
