History of our products

Named after William Shakespeare’s tragic lovers, the origins of R&J as a cigar brand date back to 1875. The brand rose to international fame in the early years of the 20th century under the leadership of Don “Pepin” Fernandez, who was among the first to recognize the appeal of cigar bands. In his heyday, no less than 20,000 different bands were used in production.
Winston Churchill became a supporter of R&J. Since his visit to Havana in 1946, his name has been commemorated on a band and used to describe the brand’s most famous size – 7 inches x 47 – Churchill.
